Step 2: Sorting at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)

  • Magnetic and Eddy Current Separation: Ferrous and non-ferrous metals are extracted using magnets and electrical currents.
  • Air and Density Separation: Lightweight materials like plastic films are separated from heavier items like glass.

Step 3: Cleaning and Processing

After sorting, recyclables need further cleaning and preparation:

  • Plastics are shredded, washed, and melted into pellets, which can be used to make new bottles, containers, and textiles.
  • Paper and Cardboard are pulped and reformed into new paper products.
  • Glass is crushed and melted to form new bottles and construction materials.
  • Metals are melted down and repurposed for manufacturing.

Step 4: Manufacturing New Products

Once processed, the recycled materials are sent to manufacturers who incorporate them into new products. Common examples include:

  • Recycled plastic bottles becoming clothing fibres or new containers.
  • Aluminium cans being remanufactured into new beverage cans.
  • Recycled paper being used for newspapers, packaging, and office supplies.
  • Crushed glass being repurposed for roads, tiles, and insulation.

Step 5: Returning to the Consumer Market

The final stage is when these recycled materials return to store shelves as new products. By purchasing items made from recycled content, consumers complete the circular economy loop and reduce the demand for virgin raw materials.
