What to Do With Bulky Waste You Can’t Fit in Your Bin
Furniture, mattresses, fridges and other large items can’t go in your regular wheelie bin collection — not because of a rule for its own sake, but because bin trucks and crews simply aren’t set up to lift and process items that size. Here’s what your actual options are.
Why bulky items can’t go in your bin
Regular collections are designed around what fits inside a closed, liftable wheelie bin. Anything left beside the bin — a mattress, an old sofa, a broken appliance — will usually be left behind by the crew, since it’s outside the scope of the standard service and often needs special handling (for example, fridges containing refrigerant gases).
Your options
- Local recycling / civic amenity centre — most items can be dropped off directly, sometimes for a small fee depending on the item and your local authority
- Bulky household waste collection — some councils offer a scheduled bulky collection service for a nominal charge; check with your local authority for availability and booking

- Donation — furniture and appliances in good condition can often be collected for free by charities, which is worth checking before anything goes to waste
A quick way to decide
One or two bulky items → recycling centre drop-off or a council bulky collection. A room’s worth of clutter or a renovation clear-out → a skip is almost always the more practical and cost-effective option, since it avoids multiple trips and lets you clear everything in one go.
