Behind the Scenes: A Productive Day at the MRF with Deputy Mark Ward
We recently had the pleasure of welcoming Deputy Mark Ward TD to our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) for an up-close look at the essential, often unseen work that powers Ireland’s recycling efforts.
It was a fantastic opportunity to pull back the curtain on what happens to your recycling after the bin leaves your curb. We walked him through the facility to showcase exactly how we sort, process, and prepare materials for their second life in the circular economy. Seeing the scale of the operation firsthand is the best way to understand the vital role technology plays in hitting those ambitious EU environmental targets.
Real Talk: Safety in the Waste Stream
While it was great to showcase our progress, we also had to get “grounded” about some of the serious challenges we face on the ground.
One of the most pressing topics we discussed was the increasing presence of nitrous oxide (‘fast gas’) canisters in the waste stream. These, alongside improperly discarded batteries and vapes, aren’t just a nuisance – they are a significant safety hazard.
When these items end up in the general waste or recycling stream, they pose a real risk of fire and injury to our collection crews and facility staff. We want to stress that these items have no place in a standard bin. Whether it’s a spent vape, a household battery, or a gas canister, these materials require specialist handling to ensure they don’t cause a catastrophe at our facility.
The Path Forward: Celebrating “Green Wins”
Despite the challenges, we remain incredibly optimistic about the progress we’re making.
Reducing contamination at the source is our biggest “Green Win.” By taking a few extra seconds to sort your waste correctly – keeping hazardous items out of the recycling bin and ensuring your recyclables are clean and dry – you are actively protecting our workers and helping us hit our national recycling targets.
We’re grateful to Deputy Mark Ward for his time, his genuine engagement, and his commitment to tackling these complex waste management issues. Open discussions like this are exactly how we move forward, improve our processes, and keep our communities safe.
