Small Items, Big Problems: Turning Ireland’s Recycling Habits Around
We are a nation that cares about the planet. That much is clear. A recent survey of over 6,900 households across Dublin and Kildare confirms that our hearts – and our intentions – are in the right place.
But when it comes to the daily reality of the kitchen bin, there is a persistent friction between what we know and what we do.
A new study by Greyhound Recycling has uncovered an interesting, “Confidence Gap.” While 99% of us know that vapes and batteries belong at WEEE collection points, and 80% feel confident in our sorting skills, Ireland’s recycling rate is still hovering at 42%. To hit that ambitious EU-wide goal of 60% by 2030, we have to bridge the divide between our high awareness and our daily habits.
It’s Not About Lack of Care
For a long time, the narrative has been that we just need to “educate” people. But the data tells a different story.
The people surveyed aren’t uninformed; they are busy. When you’re juggling a hectic schedule, busy family life, and work priorities, the correct and safe way to dispose of a dead battery can feel like an extra step that isn’t always top-of-mind.
The consequences of this “convenience gap” are real. When hazardous items slip into general waste, they pose serious risks to our facilities and the people who work in them. In fact, lithium-ion battery fires have caused over €100 million in damages to the waste sector over the last three years.
Turning Intention into “Green Wins”
So, how do we fix it? Neill Ryan, CEO of Greyhound Recycling, believes the key is making the correct choice the easiest choice.
“Confidence is high, but convenience keeps winning,” Ryan explains. “The public clearly cares, and our data proves that.”
The most optimistic takeaway from the survey? 67% of people said their primary motivation for recycling is protecting the environment for future generations. That is a powerful, values-driven foundation to build on.
If we want to close the gap, we need to meet households where they are. Greyhound is leaning into a “resourceful” approach to help make the right habits stick, including:
- In-the-Moment Reminders: New bin-sticker labels that act as a visual nudge exactly when you need it most.
- Digital Support: Targeted inbox reminders and social media tips to keep the process front-of-mind.
- Streamlined Systems: A renewed call for retail take-back schemes and consistent messaging across the industry.
As we look toward that 2030 EU goal, the shift is simple: we are moving from “knowing” to “doing.” And with 67% of us motivated by a legacy for the next generation, we have every reason to be optimistic about the path ahead.
