Achieving the EU Recycling Targets: Ireland’s Recycling Future Starts Here!

Every time you sort your waste correctly, you’re helping Ireland reach its ambitious EU recycling targets (55% by 2025, 60% by 2030, and 65% by 2035). Thanks to your efforts, Greyhound customers are already recycling at approximately 52% – but we need to do more together!

Our Multi-Million Euro Investment in Ireland’s Green Future

We’re thrilled to announce our multi-million euro investment in a state-of-the-art Material Recovery Facility (MRF) that will transform waste management in Ireland. This facility will:

  • Create new green-economy jobs in our community
  • Recover more valuable materials using cutting-edge technology
  • Significantly reduce contamination rates
  • Keep recyclable materials out of waste streams
  • Help Ireland exceed EU targets ahead of schedule

What This Means For You

  • More of your waste will be recycled – even with occasional sorting mistakes
  • Your environmental impact will be lower – helping combat climate change
  • Cost efficiency – as recycling improves, we can keep prices competitive

What This Means For Ireland if we Do Not Achieve these Targets

Failing to meet the European Union’s recycling targets can result in significant financial penalties for Ireland. While exact fines for not meeting recycling targets are not always explicitly detailed, non-compliance can lead to infringement proceedings by the European Commission. Such proceedings may result in daily fines until compliance is achieved. The EU can impose additional penalties under the Environmental Crime Directive for severe breaches of recycling or waste management obligations. These fines range from fixed amounts (€24–€40 million) to percentages of a country’s GDP or annual turnover, depending on the severity of non-compliance. The fines may not stop at that, though, for broader non-compliance (e.g., municipal waste), fines escalate based on the duration and severity of failure. Achieving and maintaining these targets is crucial to avoid such financial repercussions.
