A Smarter, Cleaner Way to Recycle: Meet Our Bin Contamination Detection System, which we call the Cleaner Bin System 

At Greyhound Recycling, we’re proud to lead the way in making waste collection smarter, more transparent, and more sustainable. That’s why we’re rolling out a new Contamination Detection System (CDS) called the Cleaner Bin System – a camera-based bin imaging service that helps ensure every item ends up in the right place. You will have seen other companies trial this system; we have taken those learnings and made them better for you. 

It’s simple. It’s efficient. And it’s designed with you in mind. 

So, what is bin imaging? 

We’ve fitted our collection trucks with small, low-resolution cameras that take a quick photo of your bin’s contents as they’re emptied. The image is used solely to check for contamination – that’s when something ends up in the wrong bin (like general waste in the recycling, or soft plastics in the compost bin). 

This isn’t about surveillance — it’s about better service and cleaner bins. 

 Why does this matter? 

Contaminated bins are a big problem for recycling in Ireland. Just one incorrect item in the wrong bin can spoil an entire truckload, sending recyclables to landfill and driving up costs for everyone. 

With bin imaging, we can: 

• Spot contamination early 

• Let you know when something’s not right 

• Share simple tips to help you get it right next time 

It’s about helping, not penalising. 

 What will you see as a customer? 

If we detect contamination in your bin, you’ll receive a helpful email from our “Greyhound Your Bin” team. It will include: 

• A photo of the issue (low-res and rubbish-only) 

• A short explanation 

• Guidance on how to sort it properly going forward 

There are no fines, no public shaming — just honest, helpful feedback designed to make recycling easier for you. 

 Your privacy is protected 

We know privacy matters. That’s why: 

• Cameras only capture the inside of the truck hopper – never your home, garden or surroundings 

• Images are low-resolution and reviewed by trained staff only 

• Photos are stored securely and deleted after a short period (30 days or less) 

This system is designed to support better bin habits, not to monitor individuals. 

 The bigger picture: A greener Ireland 

Reducing contamination is more than a housekeeping task — it’s a national goal. Cleaner bins mean: 

• More recyclables are saved from the landfill 

• A step closer to Ireland’s climate and waste reduction targets 

• Helping Ireland hit those EU Targets but 2035.
