– Industry-First Recycling Initiative Responds to Risk of Millions in EU Penalties Dublin, Ireland –
Monday 13th October: Greyhound Recycling has today launched an industry-first, data-driven campaign that lets Irish households track their recycling performance and see their impact on EU-mandated targets.
Coinciding with Climate Action Week 2025 (13th–19th October), the initiative has been designed to make it easy for households to see exactly how their individual actions impact Ireland’s overall recycling performance.
The campaign comes at a critical time, as Ireland seeks to improve recycling performance and meet key environmental targets. Every item placed in the correct bin reduces contamination, improves the quality of recyclable materials, and helps move Ireland closer to a circular economy. According to the EPA, 64 % of household waste is currently placed in the wrong bin. Diverting items from the black bin to recycling or food waste is essential to help Ireland meet its EU-mandated recycling targets of 60 % by 2030 and 65 % by 2035.
“We’re excited to show households exactly how their recycling makes a real difference,”
said Neill Ryan, CEO of Greyhound Recycling.
“This campaign makes it simple for everyone to see how the items they put in their bins contribute directly to Ireland’s recycling targets. By giving people clear insights and personalised guidance, we’re helping them understand not just their own recycling performance, but also how their everyday actions fit into the bigger picture of a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for the country.”
Greyhound’s initiative delivers data-driven guidance to help households improve recycling habits. By leveraging insights from its Camera Detection System (CDS), currently in pilot phase across select routes in Dublin, and identifying commonly misplaced items at its state-of-the-art Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), the campaign provides tailored advice to households. Participants receive regular updates on their recycling performance, along with practical tips and best-practice guidance to maximise the impact of their efforts. The CDS, developed with Repak, captures images of bin contents during collection to detect contamination. Customers are notified with photos and clear guidance to improve sorting habits.
The campaign also encourages creativity and community engagement, inviting households to share recycling tips and upcycling ideas on social media for a chance to win prizes.
