Helping You Recycle Better
Frequently Asked Questions about our Cleaner Bin System (Contamination Detection System (CDS))
At Greyhound Recycling, we’re always looking for ways to improve the way we work — for your home, your community, and our shared environment. Our new Contamination Detection System (CDS), which we call the Cleaner Bin System, is designed to help everyone recycle a little smarter, with minimal effort and maximum impact.
Here’s everything you might want to know:
-
What is the Contamination Detection System (CDS) or Cleaner Bin System?
The Cleaner Bin System is a new system that uses a small camera in our bin trucks to take a quick photo of your bin contents during collection. These photos help us spot contamination — that’s when something ends up in the wrong bin (like soft plastic in a brown bin).
-
Why are you doing this?
Simple: to help customers recycle better.
Contaminated bins can spoil whole truckloads of recycling, increase processing costs, and send more waste to landfill. By identifying the problem early and helping you fix it, we keep things cleaner, greener, and fairer for everyone.
-
Will my privacy be affected?
No. The cameras are only pointed inside the bin — they don’t capture your home, your garden, or any people.
All photos are low-resolution, reviewed by trained staff, and automatically deleted after a short time. No personal data is shared or stored long-term.

-
What happens if something’s in the wrong bin?
If we spot a mix-up, you’ll get an email from our “Greyhound Your Bin” team with:
- A photo of the bin contents
- A short explanation
- Helpful sorting tips
There’s no fine — just friendly advice.
-
Will I get these emails often?
Not unless there’s an issue. Most customers won’t hear from us unless something unusual pops up. Our goal is to help you get it right and keep improving over time.
-
Can I respond or ask questions about an image I’ve received?
Yes, absolutely. Just reply to the email you received, and our team will happily review or explain anything further.
-
How long do you keep the images?
We store bin images for a maximum of 30 days, unless needed for an investigation or clarification. After that, they’re securely deleted.
-
Will this affect my bin collection or schedule?
Not at all. Your collection service will continue as normal — the system is fully automatic and runs in the background.
-
Is this system used to issue fines or penalties?
No. The goal is education, not enforcement. We want to help customers make small changes that have a big impact. We’re here to support, not punish.
-
Where can I learn more about what goes in which bin?
Great question! You can check out our full guide on what goes in your bin or download the Greyhound App for personalised reminders and tips.
Together, let’s make every bin a little cleaner.
